Minimize HTTP Requests
An HTTP request is made for each image, stylesheet, script, Flash etc., so the more on-page components, the longer it takes for the page to render.
The quickest and easiest way to speed up your site is to optimise and simplify your design as much as you can.
Reduce server response time
You need to focus on server response time less than 200ms. There are different ways to monitor your site’s performance and working on components/issues making your site heavier and difficult to load.
Best tool that can be used for monitoring is NewRelic. It shows you code as well as Database insights and application statistics in numbers as well as in a graphical way to make your understanding easier.
Compress Your Website Pages using Gzip
Compression reduces the bandwidth of your pages and makes them lighter, thereby reducing HTTP response. You do this with a tool called Gzip.
Your web server will deliver compressed files over the Internet whenever someone reaches your website page(s).
Irrespective of the web server you are using , there are ways to enable compression in there.

Enable browser caching
When you visit a website, the elements on the page you visit are stored on your hard drive in a cache/cookie(s) or temporary storage, so the next time you visit the site, your browser loads the page locally without sending another HTTP request to the server hence improving the load speed however you may get to see some old data that was not refreshed.
So, the caching works better for static pages rather than dynamic wherein data changes very often.
Since every unnecessary piece of code also adds to the size of your page, it’s important that you eliminate extra spaces, line breaks, and indentation in your code to do the code optimisation.

Optimise CSS Delivery

Too many plugins slow your site, create security issues, and often cause crashes and other technical difficulties.
Pro Tip: Deactivate and delete any unnecessary plugins. Then remove or delete any plugin that slows your site speed.
Redirects create additional HTTP requests and increase load time so keep them to a minimum.
