In our previous post we reported how online video has continued its steady domination of the Internet, rising by 13.2 per cent year on year in December. YouTube is the number one site when it comes to watching online content and has now upgraded their services by now broadcasting sport live.
YouTube is to start broadcasting live sport matches for the first time after agreeing a deal to show Indian Premier League cricket.
The Google-owned site is in talks with agencies regarding a sponsorship package for the coverage and will show 60 matches from the league.
This further moves YouTube into the arena of live coverage. Recent live streaming events broadcast on YouTube include a gig fom U2’s 360 tour from LA, achieving nearly 10m views. The site also broadcast the live premier of James Cameron’s Avatar, sponsored by electronics company LG.
Last month YouTube launched a sports hub featuring official video content from some of the world’s leading sports organisations and events including the Paralympic and Commonwealth Games.
The live Indian Premier League (IPL) coverage is due to start in March and will feature teams including the Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils.
The league was created by Lalit Modi, VP of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), who formed the idea with Andrew Wildblood of the International Management Group (IMG) sport management agency.
The tournament started in 2008 and is played across India, including cities such as Mumbai, Jaipur and Delhi.
Google will split revenues from the sponsorship rights with the IPL.
