As the Academy’s director of marketing, Janet Weiss, has stated, this year the Oscars are planning to make use of the best known social networks: Facebook and Twitter.

This year the Academy streamed live online its list of nominations for the first time at Oscars.org and on the Academy’s Facebook page, which brought them an audience of more than 170,000 unique viewers! Furthermore, there are a number of social media surprises that the Academy has in store for their audience this year. They have launched an Oscars iPhone app as to engage Internet mobile users, which will allow fans to see how their Oscar predictions stack up against others. In addition to this, the Academy plans to release behind-the-scenes footage from the preparations and rehearsals leading up to this year’s telecast, which will be syndicated to online video sites and digital out-of-home networks.
