Factors That Determine Your Search Engine Ranks

search engine marketingWe have mentioned about on-page and off page search engine optimisation strategies in our previous posts.   First step is to get your website designed from a professional. A professional can implement numerous SEO techniques while making the website design in addition to making a site that is user-friendly. Other factors that will  help you in ranking high on search engines are listed below -

Keyword Density
Site Structure
Backlinks
Aging

Keyword Research and Keyword Density

First step is to do keyword research and find the most relevant keywords for your site. It is difficult to suggest a keyword density for you to target on your website. Your business will need to analyse your direct competitors to determine what the best density for your type of website. Optimal keyword densities are no longer a one-size-fits-all calculation. Your industry and site-type will affect the optimal densities and thus a top 10 competitor review will be required to determine this.

Site Structure

Site’s internal and external link building structure is important because it determines the order in which your page content gets seen by the search engines which content will be ranked the highest. Content that occurs higher up in the code of your page is given a higher weight than content lower down in the code. Second, a properly structured site will be lower in code through the use of CSS, reduced or eliminated table use, etc. The reduction in code will push the content higher up the page as far as a search engine is concerned and thus, it will be given more weight.

Site structure is a very important aspect on Yahoo! While having a good site structure is important for a variety of reasons, there are significant gains in ranking when pages are  brought into compliance with W3C standards. While slight gains were noticeable on both Google and MSN they were so minor that they may well have just been part of the ebb-and-flow of the results.

Backlinks

When working with SEO companies, a strong use of back-links is always important in gaining the ranks. When it comes to calculating back links Yahoo is far more similar to Google than MSN. Your link building strategy must take care of following -

  • Back-links-In terms of the back-links, a link at or near the bottom of the page is less valuable than a link nearer to the top. Also, if your link is on a page with other links, the effect that link will have on your rankings decreases respective to the number of links on the linking page.
  • Anchor text You should not forget the importance of the ‘Anchor text’ which is the text used to link to your site. If used with the associated keywords with your site/page, it holds a great significance in page rankings. Also, if that anchor text in the midst of the content it will hold greater weight than if that anchor text is in a directory-style format above a description (i.e. link a standard links page)
  • Non-reciprocal links – reciprocal links are considered valuable on Yahoo. Not withstanding do add non-reciprocal links such as directory listings and other one-way links.
  • Quality-The quality of the site also has an effect on the page rank. It is more than the numbers of the links but more about the quality of the links. What Google has attempted to do in the past with Page-Rank can be used as a quasi-benchmark. However it is different  on Yahoo. It is calculated in regards to whether it is from a site that is ranking well on Yahoo for the same or related phrases from a trusted domain. A trusted domain can be considered any domain that is over 3 years old, has a solid number of back links coming from a wide variety of sites and which at least a solid number of are non-reciprocal links.

Website Aging

New sites and links are not given the same weight as sites and links that have been around for a while. This means that new sites can find it difficult to rank especially for competitive phrases within the first six months. The aging delay on sites has been extended over the past couple years however it isn’t as severe as that imposed by Google.  When a new site is developed it obviously has no links. These links are subject to a delay that appears to be somewhere between 3 to 4 months before they hold their full weight. These delays can make it harder for new sites to rank for competitive phrases inside of 8 to 12 months. Although the restrictions are lighter than those imposed by Google one can expect to see rankings for secondary, tertiary and completely unexpected phrases far faster on Yahoo. This process can be avoided across all of the search engines by purchasing clean, keyword strong aged domains that will allow you to rank immediately after your SEO efforts are complete.
